Helheim - Interview

V.U. : You’ve already been existing for 14 years now. So, as an introduction, please tell the reader something about your history so far.
Well, we’ve released 5 albums and two mini albums so far. Done some touring, and in November we’ll go on our 3rd tour thus far. Helheim have always dealt with the Norse mythology, and will continue to do so in the future.
V.U. : Your concept album “The Journeys And The Experiences Of Death” has just been released. Are you pleased with the feedback you got so far? What exactly is the album about?
Yes, very much so. It deals with the death cults in the Norse mythology. The mundane and the otherworldly aspects are all portrayed through the various songs.
V.U. : How did the collaboration with Jiri of ROOT accomplish ?
We simply just contacted him since we felt that his vocals would fit some of the tracks on the album. We all think highly of Root, and it’s quite an honour that he lent us his voice.
nordic Pagan Black Metal at it´s best: HELHEIM
V.U. : You once said that you wouldn’t like to release one of your own records on your own record label, but now you did. Why ?
That’s true. I felt that it would interfere too much with the label work, but the others in the company were quite keen on the idea. So I just stepped out of the whole thing and let the other members of Helheim do the negotiations with the label. I didn’t want to have an influence at all. It worked out fine, and I think it’s a good label, so why not. We can control things much better now then ever before.
V.U. : When it comes to the song writing , are you more a dictator-like band or do you support the idea of democracy ? Also, since V’Gandr writes all the texts, is it only him or are all of you interested in these different death cults and the whole Norse mythology?
We work as a democracy, or else it could well have been a solo project of either one of us. Well, I guess I possess the most interest in the Norse mythology, but the others are aware of my lyrics and stands behind it 100%. I don’t think that all members need to possess the same knowledge, but it’s important that we chare the same values.
V.U. : Another question about the Norse mythology : You have studied it quite intensive, so what do you think about this Viking – Boom everywhere ? It seems that this trend is rather superficially dealt with by some.....
I don’t pay attention to it that much. I follow it by my own terms and couldn’t care less about trends. I wouldn’t know if it’s superficially or not as I don’t know these bands or the persons behind them, but I guess there’re many different ways to view the Norse mythology, and some of them may use it wrong and without in-depth understanding.
V.U. : After you’ve already been playing at the German Ragnarök Festival in April and the Bands Battle Festival in June, you will return for a full European Tour in November. Are you looking forward to playing in Germany? Which country do you favour playing in ?
Very much so. Helheim really enjoys the stage-life, and we would gladly play more. Hmm, which country is the best? Well, Germany is always good, as well as Holland. But really, I don’t know. It’s more single concerts that can portray if something’s good or not, and that may vary.
mystic and brutal : HELHEIM live
I’m in a record store, but this one is soon closing, so me and two others may open a new one. We’ll see. Dark days these are.
V.U : Is there anything left you would like to tell our webzine reader ?
Check out Helheim if you’ve never heard us before. Stay pagan and remember that Heathendom is resistance!!!.
V.U. : Thank you for your time !
Thank you.
